Why we don't do 'winners', and what we do instead

Competition designs systems where most participants lose. We built YPL the other way around.
When we started YPL we were offered, repeatedly, a template, run an annual prize, pick a winner, generate press. It is a well-understood model. It also generates, every year, a class of people who applied, opened up, were judged and were told no.
We chose a different design. Every leader who is accepted into the network stays in the network, with mentorship, funding pathways, and a public profile. There is no podium. There is a long table.
The trade-off is honest, slower visibility, less drama, harder fundraising in the first years. The upside, after five years, is a community that does not have to rebuild itself every January.
